Abstract: With improved strength properties, using minimal material and fine surface finishes; diecast zinc components provide designers with unique conversion opportunities. The traditional markets for zinc diecastings have been the automative, hardware and plumbing. However, zinc diecastings are growing into other markets such as communications, electronics and home appliances, often at the expense of thermoplastic parts. This growth is due primarily to three reasons: (1) the ability to produce complex shapes, (2) fine surface finish and (3) low cost and high mechanical properties when compared to competing materials. Zinc alloys exhibit tensile strengths up to 52K with elongations, at lower tensile strengths up to 20%.
