Abstract: The design of tooling for the permanent mold casting process requires attention to the tool's manufacturability and material to ensure a tool that meets casting complexity and volume. One important step that has evolved is the use of process simulation that shows potential problems caused by solidification shrinkage induced porosity. An example of redesigning an automotive cylinder head is provided and shows what can be accomplished when targeting toward simplified tooling. A number of materials have been used for tooling, ranging from cast iron to maraging steel. Copper-beryllium alloys are also used to promote directional solidification and enhanced component mechanical properties.
