Abstract: Semisolid forming (SSF) of aluminum alloys with equiaxed microstructure is gaining large interest due to the reduction in microsegregation when compared to conventional casting. This emerging technology is based on the ability to obtain a spheroidal fine microstructure for raw material by induction heating. This article describes the results of a inductive coil design effort and numerical simulation for the manufacture of aluminum frame products requiring strength and wear resistance. Two parts were heat treated to a T5 or T6 condition and the mechanical properties were measured.
