A Study on Fuzzy Logic Quality Control System of Molding Sand

Abstract: Casting quality is directly related to molding sand quality. The compactability control of the molding sand is one of the most important items in molding sand quality control. In this paper, the development of a molding sand quality on line testing and fuzzy logic control system has been reported. Molding sand properties, such as compactability, green compressive strength, etc., are tested in real time, and compactability is controlled by adjusting water additions with a fuzzy logic controller according to the testing results obtained and the relationship between compactability and moisture content. Compared with the linear least squares fitting controller, the fuzzy logic controller is not only more robust, but also more precise and more reliable especially when the moisture and the temperature of the return sand fluctuate tempestuously. The system has been used in foundry practice and excellent results have been achieved.
