Image analysis of aluminum castings

Abstract: Accurate analysis of aluminum casitngs is an important factor in helping foundries to improve quality control and product development. This article describes the techniques developed at McGill university for assessing the porosity levels, dendrite arm spacing and particle count of an aluminum alloy 356. Clemex Vision image analysis software and an optical microscope with automated imaging routines were developed for each of the applications. For example, in the analysis of sillicon particles, almost 60,000 objects were evaluated from a total of 100 fields.
