Abstract: In november 2000, it was announced that the Institute of British Foundryman was launching a new program that was related to the fluid flow though molds and the casting filling process. This article is only part one of the several sections and deals with metals flow rates, velocity due to gravity, and opposed to gravity also the use of 'coefficient' of discharge. For example, one area that is discussed in this article is the velocity of a falling liquid stream due to gravity and its value in terms of metal head. Parts to be published later will cover laminar and turbulent flow, Reynolds Number, Weber Number, bulk and surface turbulence and Bernoulli's theory. Other sections will deal with the theory of runner systems, metal supply systems and computer simulation of the filling process.
