Abstract: Computer simulation of the casting is being used increasingly in commercial foundries to improve quality and decrease cost and lead-time. One drawback is that it depends on the user to analyze the result and make the appropriate changes. This article describes an initiative to move one step beyond solid modeling to multidimensional optimization. Optimization technology enables the computer to search for an optimum solution without human intervention. This optimization technology is already being used for the successful redesign of automotive components for reduced weight and improved stress resistance. An optimization software called HyperOpt was utilized in conjunction with the SOLIDCast solidification modeling package.
