Abstract: The iron and steel industry has undergone a technological revolution in the last 40 years. In a relatively short time, the North American industry has observed the complete disappearence of the basic open hearth as well as the wide spread adoption of the continous casting process and the tremendous growth of the electric arc furnace sector. This article describes the iron and steel making industry from the very early days through to the current efforts involving direct iron making, without the use of blast furnace. Several of these technologies have advanced to a fairly developed stage and will likely to be implemented on a production scale sometime in the future. The article lists 50 references.
