Computer-aided methoding of Aluminum-alloy
components, and riser-less casting of SG
Iron components
Goutam Sutradhar

Background : In this competitive era, foundries need to ensure high yield and low rejections to meet the demands of their customers and survive in the market.

Methods : A few S.G iron and steel components produced in foundries were investigated to obtain riser-less castings. This was achieved by computer-aided methoding of different layouts followed by simulation to predict internal quality.

Results : The optimal methoding layout was implemented in the foundry. All castings were sectioned through the critical areas and found to be free from any defects.

Conclusion : The yield was found to increase by 10-15 % after using the modified methods layout.
